The Tongariro Crossing, in New Zealand's North Island, is a 19.4km day walk traversing the volcanic landscape past Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings), across craters, and past stunning blue and emerald lakes, in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual World Heritage Site.
