Steve Kelsall, Nature's Amphitheatre (PEOPLE WILDERNESS 2022)
Cathedral Gorge is a natural amphitheatre of sandstone rock located within the Bungle Bungle Ranges in Purnululu National Park. The range contains the most outstanding example of cone karst in sandstones anywhere in the world and owes its existence and uniqueness to several interacting geological, biological, erosional and climatic phenomena. The range is also renowned for its striking banded domes. They are made of sandstone deposited about 360 million years ago. Erosion by creek, rivers and weathering in the past 20 million years has carved out these domes, along with spectacular chasms and gorges creating a surreal landscape. In more recent times Cathedral Gorge was featured in the iconic 'Qantas the Spirit of Australia' TV ad in 2009, and has played host to Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Opera Australia, who consider it "one of the best, if not the best, cathedral they've ever played in". Image shot in September 2021 using my Nikon D4S with Nikkor 16-35 mm lens, f/5, 1/100 and ISO 100.
