Daniel Vaughan, Cenote Kaleidoscope (PLACES WILDERNESS 2024)

This was few weeks after Hurricane Beryl ploughed through the Caribbean and the US. The cenotes of Mexico are often very clear waters, but the hurricane brought a lot of rain and with it run-off into many cenotes. Here at Cenote Jardín Del Eden (Garden of Eden), the water turned a greenish hue from the algae, combined with slight tinting of tannins of the plant material decaying near the surface. A well-timed dive, early morning, to avoid the crowds and to have the Sun penetrate the filtered layers of the cenote. Magical kaleidoscope of colour.
