Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) has unveiled the finalised designs for the Next Iconic Walk proposal in the Tyndall Range, following extensive community feedback from consultation sessions held between 2021 and 2024.

The three-day walking track, starting at Lake Plimsoll and ending at Lake Margaret, includes overnight stays at Lake Huntley and Lake Mary campgrounds.

The new designs, created by Jaws Architecture, feature a range of accommodation options, including communal huts with bunk rooms, private pods, and tent platforms.

The final designs cater to 44 walkers per day, with 12 in two-person pods, 22 in shared bunk rooms, and 10 camping on single and double-bed tent platforms.

The plans also include a walk departure gateway with a shuttle bus turnaround, shelter, and amenities for hikers.

Incorporating community feedback, the PWS has focused on enhancing sustainability. The updates ensure the project utilises renewable energy, ensures water supply during bushfire events, and manages waste effectively.

Other eco-friendly features include building orientation to maximise solar energy, minimize wind exposure, and reduce maintenance needs, with accommodation consolidated into two nodes instead of three.

Construction is anticipated to commence in the summer of 2025–2026 with the trail complete and open to visitors by summer 2028–2029.
