In a time of overtourism it seems some locals are fighting back.

Angry locals in Lanzarote, a part of the Canary Islands off West Africa, are erecting fake 'closed due to overcrowding' signs at island beauty spots in a campaign against holidaymakers.

The posters and stickers have appeared on the island last month and were put up by anti-tourism protesters, who wrote on social media: 'It is time to boycott, with the tools at our disposal, the tourist activity that is expelling us from our own land.'

Sounds serious.

According to msn.com: 'Lanzarote has a limit' is the motto of the call for worried residents on Lanzarote and is carried out by anonymous citizens 'who do not represent any group or political party.'

A huge protest is planned for April 20 with residents from many parts of the Canary Islands attending.

Organisers of the event say the island is collapsing socially and environmentally.

In this day and age of cheap air flights, package holidays and Instagram-worthy sites, mass tourism is certainly becoming challenge to the locals on many popular destinations.
