The Great Walks Oct-Nov issue is out now!

The theme is 'Colours of Australia' and the walks we showcase are filled with many of the continent's iconic colours.

Walks include the Northern Rivers Rail Trail at the top of NSW, Victoria's Alpine Shire in the High Country and Tassie's Flinders Island.

One of the country's most iconic colours is the ochre dirt from Central Australia and our story on Kakadu National Park reveals a part of the country with a rich indigenous history.

"Archaeological evidence suggests that Aboriginal people have lived in the area for over 65,000 years and Ubirr showcases a variety of artistic styles and subjects that encapsulate the cultural history," writes Matt Gunn.

"Depictions of animals, dreamtime stories and humans reflect the history of the local inhabitants. The paintings and their stories are essentially a library of knowledge and beliefs, passed down through generations."

We then head overseas to Europe to you show Italy's 10 best walks including the magnificent Dolomites at the top of the country.

"Three divine though strenuous days across the magical high-altitude plateau of the Pale di San Martino," writes Gillian Price. "The Palarondatrek uses a string of well-run mountain huts with mouth-watering meals. Access to the start/finish is from Fiera di Primiero by bus to Cant del Gal, unless you prefer the linked cable-cars from San Martino di Castrozza to Rosetta."

In our Walksmart section we look at the best gear for summer hiking including gear with a good UVF factor,  and we speak to someone who talks about how they dealt with agoraphobia - an anxiety disorder characterised by a specific fear of particular places and situations that the person feels anxious or panics, such as open spaces. It's a moving story.
