The Great Walks Annual is out now!
The special issue showcases walks up all of our states' and territories' highest peaks.
We'll show you how to reach Tassie's Mount Ossa, Qld's Mount Bartle Frere, the ACT's Mount Bimberi, NT's Mount Zeil, SA's Mount Woodroffe, WA's Mount Meharry, Vic's Mount Bogong and - of course - the highest of them all, Mount Kosciuszko in NSW.
"We think the best way to experience Mt. Kosi is via the 22km loop Main Range walk. It’s challenging, but worth the sweat," writes Andrea Purnomo.
"Starting from Charlotte Pass on Kosciuszko Road, it’ll take you across alpine high country of the Thredbo-Perisher area of Kosciuszko NP, through UNESCO protected glacier-carved landscapes, across the famous Snowy River, pass Hedley Tarn and Blue Lake, and up the rugged Main Range to the rooftop."
Other walks in the Annual include an epic winter traverse of the Australian Alps Walking Track and ten top walks in Victoria's Falls Creek region.
We also feature a wonderful story of a family walking to Everest Base Camp - with a toddler!
"All along the trail people cheered him on as he walked down. A group of about 40 hikers heading up high-fived him as he passed them," writes Shareen Pote, mother of five-year-old Gabriel.
"At lunch time, we walked into a restaurant and were greeted by a huge round of applause. People would stop to take selfies with Gabriel and congratulate him on his huge achievement."
We also feature our annual crossword - how well do you know our country's great walks??
And in our Walksmart section we review water bladders and talk about personal responsibility in the bush, including a draft plan by the Vic government to fine walkers who leave designated bushwalking tracks. Could this be the end of bushbashing in the state?
