The Great Walks 2024 Annual is out now and the theme of the issue is Perfect Panoramas.

We explore some of the country’s greatest walking tracks that offer spectacular views, such as the Australian Alps Walking Track, the Larapinta Trail and coastal southern WA - and in that part of the country there is plenty to see!

“In WA, the Southern Ocean stretches from Cape Leeuwin to the South Australian border. The towns (Walpole, Denmark, Albany and Esperance) on the coast provide great bases to head off on a day walk or a few. The Bibbulmun Track runs along the coast, from one national park to another,” writes Jane Pelusey.

“Rolling sets of waves crash into the rugged coastline of long beaches and high cliffs. The trail winds along the edge of the cliff and down to the beach where the sand is squeaky white. It’s cooler down here in general, so great hiking weather. In spring, the coastal heath comes alive with a rainbow of colourful wildflowers. In summer, the aqua ocean invites the hiker in for a swim.”

Overseas we head to Borneo to retrace the steps of POW soldiers who had to endure the Sandakan Death Marches and, as you would expect, it was an emotional experience for our writer.

“The jungle was wet and slippery from overnight rain, making our trip even more challenging and real,” writes Renai McArdle. “I experienced moments of serene connection with nature, an eerie peace, followed by the stark realisation of our journey’s gravity, and the distance I was away from loved ones.

“Lost in thought and taking my mind off the track, I walked into a tree! Whilst my pain was real, the tears that had started to flow were because of the contrast between my situation and those of our POWs. I had food, water, clothes, and access to medication, with the promise of a bed that night. Not for our POWs; the comparison was incomprehensible.”

Our Walksmart section looks at how hiking can help heal a broken heart and we showcase some of the best outdoor gear on the market for Australia’s toughest walks.

We also promote our next competition where you can win a Life’s An Adventure pack-free guided walking holiday to Japan!
