Last week we reported a bushwalker protesting the closure of Mount Warning, south of the Gold Coast, had become the first person fined for climbing the summit since it was officially closed to the public.
Now we have learned the activist Marc Hendrickx will challenge the penalty in court.
Hendrickx scaled the World-Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park, also known as Mount Warning, in April before receiving a $300 fine in the mail last week.
But he says intends on contesting the New South Wales Parks and Wildlife Service fine, arguing it was issued incorrectly and the track’s closure is unjustified.
“I believe that the fine was not fairly given. I was issued a warning and that should have been the end of it," Mr Hendrickx told Sky News.
“I think there are grounds into challenge the reasons for the closure in court … The track at the moment is no worse than any other grade five tracks in the state”.
