Tasmania’s iconic Overland Track remains closed until 23 February due to bushfires.
Parks Tas plans to reopen on Monday 24 February 2025.
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) North-West Regional Manager and Incident Controller Nic Deka said fire crews were facing challenging conditions.
“The Overland Track closure is being extended for two weeks to ensure the fire boundaries are contained and there is certainty of our ability to keep walkers safe," Mr Deka said in a press release.
“Firefighters are dealing with challenging conditions today and these will continue for at least the next week.
“The closure will enable impact assessments and works that may be necessary to reopen the track."
Cradle Mountain remains open and the Cradle Mountain Shuttle Bus is fully operational. Only the multi-day walks on the Overland Track are currently affected.
Dry lightning started several bushfires in western Tasmania a week ago. So far the fires have burnt a combined 45,000 hectares and affected a 1.6km section of the Overland Track.
Three fires of most concern are the Canning Peak fire, which has affected the Overland Track, and the Yellowband Plain and Mount Donaldson fires in the Takayna/Tarkine region.
An emergency "evacuate now" warning was published on Tuesday afternoon for Corinna in the Takayna/Tarkine region — the location of the Corinna Wilderness Village.
"Fire conditions are expected to be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving," the warning says.
State Fire Commander Jeremy Smith said firefighting efforts on Tuesday were focused on fire suppression activities, including the use of fire retardants.
"We have more than 50 remote area team firefighters, six bulldozers and 32 aircraft available to be tasked to the three key fires of interest," he said.
